Sweeny, Wingate & Barrow, P.A. was started in 1993 when the named partners combined their litigation and transactional experience to create a firm committed to excellence, integrity, and service. Position Summary

Our Columbia office is seeking an Associate to assist members of the firm with litigation matters.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Advising and representing clients before tribunals on litigation matters
  • Holding meetings with clients in order to discuss details of a case
  • Conducting research and analysis of legal problems
  • Analyzing the probable outcomes of cases, using knowledge of legal precedents
  • Interpreting laws, rulings, and regulations for clients
  • Writing and oral advocacy on behalf of clients
  • Overseeing paralegal, law clerk, and legal assistant work
  • Taking depositions
  • Sitting as first, second, or third chair on bench or jury trials
  • Performing other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate Degree from an ABA accredited institution
  • Member of the South Carolina Bar
  • Member of the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina
  • Certificate of Completion of Rule 403 of the South Carolina Appellate Court Rules (SCACR)
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in civil litigation
  • Strong negotiation, analytical, writing, and oral advocacy skills
  • Proficiency in legal research
  • Strong computer skills and proficiency in MS Office applications
  • Ability to work as a “self-starter” and handle litigation matters from pleadings to appeal
  • Ability to be flexible, to adapt, and act quickly when urgent matters require it
  • High ethical standards consistent with Rules of Professional Conduct
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality consistent with Rules of Professional Conduct

Summary of Position:

Preparation and filing of petitions, H-1B visa applications and labor certification applications in addition to L-1 intracompany transfer petitions.  Compiles and analyzes case facts, drafts correspondence, maintains and organizes client documentation.  Maintains direct contact with multiple attorneys.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepares documents to assist attorneys with matters.
  • Reviews complex legal documents.
  • Compile and analyze case facts.
  • Determine and calendar deadlines.
  • Communicate with clients and visa beneficiaries as needed.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is preferred.
  • Paralegal certification is preferred.
  • Immigration experience is preferred.
  • International exposure a plus.
  • Paralegal experience is preferred.
  • Proficiency in all Microsoft applications, including but not limited to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Expertise in Lexis, WestLaw, Live Note, Concordance, Case Map, Docketing, and Document Management Systems.
  • Experience with expense and billing systems a plus.

The Job: The agency is seeking a staff attorney to serve in the Office of General Counsel as both primary counsel to the Insurance Reserve Fund and general staff lawyer to the State Fiscal Accountability Authority, its executive offices, and its governing board. Experience serving as insurance defense counsel in trial court litigation covered by the Tort Claims Act is strongly preferred. Significant experience in complex transactions, state and federal litigation, and/or appellate practice is preferred.

The Employer: Formerly part of SC Budget and Control Board, the State Fiscal Accountability Authority is the State agency charged with administering the State’s self-insurance fund (the Insurance Reserve Fund); with reviewing and approving major government transactions (capital improvements, bonds/debt, real property transactions, etc.); and with operating the State’s central purchasing office for major contracts, including those involving information technology, supplies, complex services, and construction.

Minimum Requirements: A juris doctor degree or its equivalent from an accredited law school. Licensed as an attorney at least 4 years. Membership in the South Carolina Bar.

The City of West Columbia and the City of Cayce invite qualified attorneys to apply for a part-time position as the appointed Municipal Public Defender for the two cities. Under limited supervision, the Municipal Public Defender will provide legal services (including representation at trial) to indigent defendants in the municipal courts of each city who are charged with municipal level criminal/traffic offenses.
