About the Richland County Bar Association

A Legacy of Serving Richland County’s Legal Community

For much of its early history, the Richland County Bar Association (RCBA) served a practical purpose: organizing court calendars and fostering camaraderie among the bench and bar. This was during a time when circuit judges rotated regularly throughout the state.

In 1960, the RCBA began to take shape into what it is today. Led by President N. Heyward Clarkson Jr., the RCBA began holding regular membership meetings, often at luncheons featuring speakers and topics relevant to the legal community.

Growing Into Something Greater

In 1975, the Richland County Bar Association was chartered as a corporation by President John Gregg McMaster. The 1970s saw the establishment of many efforts that still exist today, such as the distribution of the Richbar News.

In 1980, President Hoover C. Blanton launched a “free lawyer” clinic on Law Day. It allowed any member of the public to meet with a lawyer for a free 30-minute consultation. Last wills and testaments were drafted for free for people aged 65 and over.

That spirit of community, growth, and service has never stopped.

about us

Who We Are Today

Today, the RCBA is the professional home for attorneys practicing in Richland County. Through social events, professional networking, community outreach, and advocacy, we work to make the practice of law here rewarding and meaningful. We are guided by the principles in our bylaws: defending the Constitution, advancing the science of jurisprudence, upholding the highest standards of integrity and honor, and applying our collective expertise for the public good.

Through volunteer efforts like Ask-An-Attorney and the Divorce Help Desk, we give lawyers a chance to use their expertise to help their community. An active Executive Committee and a network of dedicated committees ensure that these values are lived out every day.

A Place for All Lawyers to Find Professional Community and Support

Our members are attorneys who believe that a stronger bar association means a stronger legal community. They join to connect with colleagues, find mentorship, amplify underrepresented voices, and make a difference, both inside and outside the courtroom.
