Serving Our Community is a Core Part of RCBA Membership

Guided by the RCBA Public Service Committee, the Richland County Bar coordinates closely with the  SC Bar Pro Bono Program and the Pro Bono Program at the Rice School of Law to provide members opportunities to give back to the community. The Richland County Bar Association offers several pro bono initiatives to meet attorneys’ varied interests and busy schedules.

Ask-An-Attorney Clinic

Ask-An-Attorney is held on the second Friday of each month, from 1:00 – 4:00 pm at the downtown Richland Library (1431 Assembly St., Columbia, SC 29201). 

Volunteer attorneys are needed to assist with legal consultations from the general public. Topics may include securing identification, criminal record expungement, license reinstatement, and restoration of rights. By partnering with Rainy Day Fund, additional resources may be available to address financial barriers in order to exit the legal system.

Divorce Help Desk

Divorce Help Desk is hosted on the second Tuesday of each month, from 11:00 am – 12:30 pm at the Richland Family Court Office (1701 Main Street, Columbia, SC 29201). 

Volunteer attorneys are needed to assist self-represented people seeking to obtain a divorce. Attorneys may assist with reviewing forms for accuracy, answering questions about service of process, preparing for a final hearing, and referring resources.

Homeless Experience Legal Protection (HELP) Clinic

HELP is held on the first and third Thursday of the month from 8:30 – 10:00 am at Transitions Homeless Center (2025 Main Street, Columbia, SC 29201). 

Volunteer attorneys are needed to meet with homeless individuals for half-hour consultation sessions. Attorneys may provide basic information and guidance on family law, criminal record expungement, government benefits, and other legal issues.

Volunteer Requirements

The only requirements to volunteer with one of the RCBA’s volunteer-led clinics are a law license and a willingness to help. 

New volunteers will receive support and guidance, including the opportunity to sit in on sessions with more experienced attorneys to help them get comfortable. Additional opportunities to volunteer take place throughout the year and in conjunction with our other community partners. Contact Mandy Wren to learn more.
