Litigation Associate-Minimum 5 YEARS EXPERIENCE

SCVAN Bilingual Victim Advocate/Paralegal

Organization Background

The South Carolina Victim Assistance Network (SCVAN) serves as the voice for all victims of crime in South Carolina and the people who serve them. Through its programs and services, SCVAN seeks to fulfill three main objectives: 1) ensure ALL crime victims receive access to and assistance from the criminal justice system; 2) improve the quality of services provided to crime victims by victim advocates; and 3) ensure the criminal justice system adequately serves crime victims. SCVAN currently manages five programs that provide services and resources to our state’s crime victims and the professionals who serve them: 1) Annual SC Victims’ Rights Week Conference; 2) Emergency Financial Assistance Fund; 3) Legal Assistance to Victims (LAV); 4) Statewide Forensic and Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Coordinator; and 5) Crime Victim Information Program.

Position Description

The LAV Bilingual Victim Advocate/Paralegal will be a full-time, salaried employee who works 37.5 hours per week and devotes 100% of his/her time to this Project in the Columbia office. This position will report to the LAV Staff Attorney. This position will be primarily responsible for 1) providing client intake, victim service referrals and resources to clients and 2) serving as a paralegal on all legal cases handled by the Program Director and other attorneys. This position will also be responsible for court scheduling for pro and low bono attorneys and assisting the Attorney and Case Management Coordinator in maintaining client intake forms, client files, training evaluations, and client satisfaction forms.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and Spanish
  • Experience with both civil and criminal matters
  • Knowledge of South Carolina’s criminal justice system, particularly from a crime victim’s standpoint
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse clients
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English)
  • Familiarity with Box and Clio file management/storage systems

The South Carolina School Boards Insurance Trust is a service of the South Carolina School Boards Association and provides property, liability and automobile insurance for the school districts in the state. The SCSBA is seeking a Property & Casualty Claims Manager.

Qualifications

Job Goal

Under general supervision, assist in the implementation and efficient operation of the Property and Casualty program.

Performance Responsibilities

  1. Reviews and investigates assigned claims to closure.
  2. Works with assigned Defense Counsel to determine most appropriate course of action.
  3. Works with re-insurers throughout course of claim.
  4. Reviews cases for coverage issues.
  5. Reviews and processes payments of appropriate bills on assigned claims.
  6. Responds to inquiries made by member districts regarding claims.
  7. Makes periodic visits to districts to discuss claims.
  8. Represents the Trust at mediations and trials.
  9. Attends educational seminars as approved by assistant director for P&C.
  10. Maintains a working knowledge of current legal and legislative changes in the property and casualty arena.
  11. Work with Assistant Director for P&C on coverage matters and underwriting responsibilities.
  12. Performs other related duties as requested by the Assistant Director for P&C
